Marty's Struggle

"I'm in a win-win situation. If I survive this struggle, I have more time to be with my grandchildren. If I don't, I get to be with my Lord." - Marty Hess

This blog is for Marty.

Marty Hess is an elder in the First Presbyterian Church of Peru, Indiana. She is a great mom and wonderful wife. Her husband, Jack, is the pastor. Marty is a registered nurse and works at Dukes Memorial Hospital in Peru. She has a kind and gentle spirit.

Marty is a breast cancer survivor.

Marty is fighting for her life. She has myelooysplastic syndrome (MDS), which eventually develops into acute myelogenous leukemia (ALS). The chemotherapy that put the breast cancer into remission has led to this.

Rev. Hess announced Marty's breast cancer to the congregation four years ago this week, on World Communion Sunday, 2002. Today, September 28, 2006, Marty is again in the hospital, undergoing tests to deermine her ability to sustain six days of intense chemotherapy, scheduled to begin tomorrow. The following week, the chemo should begin to show some results. Week 3 will be a real test. Marty will be at her weakest, and more ill than she has ever been in her life. Afer that, Marty should begin to gain strength and feel better.

This blog is provided to keep friends and familes updated concerning Marty's condition and her progress. It will also serve as a journal for Marty and Jack as they travel together, hand in hand, along this frightful way. They are led and comforted by the light of their faith. This is a place where friends, family, and well-wishers of all ilk are invited to share their own stories of faith, strength and encouragement, to express their concerns and share their blessings.

Thank you for your prayers.

Dear Marty, I hope that your day has been good. Julie and Justin came over this afternoon. I think Julie's to-do list is getting longer. I have found that being "Mother of the Groom" three times did not prepare me for being "Mother of the Bride"!!
God bless you and hold you safe and secure. Love, Joan

Hey Marty,
I am sorry to hear you are at battle again, but you must be a great soldier to be there. I know this seems difficult, but know that God is there with you carrying this for you, Jack is there to share this with you and all our prayers are there to hold you both together, no matter what the outcome.
We are all very proud to be witnessing your courage and your strength of character. You have a wonderful attitude that many of us could learn from.
Love and prayers to you both- Kelly Voss

Hi Marty

I tried this earlier and got cut off so we'll try again. We had Bible study last night, went pretty well. Debbie did a good job with the lesson. Everyone wanted to send their love and let you know they were thinking about you. (Nancy, Debbie, Kelly, Katie and me) We tried to call you a couple of times but didn't get an answer. You may have been getting your blood. We had a good time they didn't leave till about 9:30
but we missed you. Take care, we love you! Hugs to Jack too.

Love Susie
