Marty's Struggle

Tuesday Evening

Greetings to all of you!

Well, today has been a very interesting day. As we expected Marty needed blood today. She received two units and they were very slow going in, particularly the first one: liked to think that it was never going to get in. But both units are now in – praise the Lord! Tomorrow we will look forward to the need for platelets. At least they usually go in a lot faster.

Today we were told by both Dr.Lee and Dr.Barnes, that Marty’s lungs are not totally back to normal but they are certainly looking and sounding a lot better. They are still giving some Zosyn(antibiotic) and Methylprednisolone (cortisone) and feel that for now all is well. Also, the thing that we expected has come true; the AML is NOT IN REMISSION. In fact, before the last chemo started she had 40 to 45% blasts, (cancer, abnormal cells). In the biopsy done Friday, she had 30 to 40% or about 35% blasts. So, the preparation for another round of chemo is under way. This time the approach is going to be a little different. Hours ahead of the actually chemo agents, they will be giving Marty a drug that the WBC’s like called Neupogen and will help the the WBC’s to grow bigger and stronger. Then right when they are feeling good and looking for more to take in themselves, along will come the chemo to do them in. The theory sounds great, we will have to take a day at a time and see if it works.

Many of you are probably asking the same questions that I did – will this not be very hard on Marty’s body and can her body take it? Dr. Lee has said that he is not ready to give Martha up to the Lord yet. At the same time, he affirmed that yes this will be very hard on a recovering body. He said that we can expect some really bad days, as this is very risky business. Anything can happen and we just have to take a day at a time. It is anticipated that we will be here for another 4 weeks.

Marty’s blood sugar has still been rather high and Dr. Lee has called in a diabetic specialist to help manage that. We have not seen him yet, but the nurses have been in contact with him and he gave orders for dinner time and it seemed to work well, because her 9 pm reading was only 145 which was great in comparison to what it has been all day. There are two other issues that also concern us and that we have spoken to the doctor about. First is the one that we have spoken about before the retention of liquid. At present she is under her admission weight, but her feet and ankles are still rather large, especially the left one. So, we are looking forward to that being corrected. The other is that she has been having a lot of problems with diarrhea. It will be a real blessing when that is under control.

The bottom line is that we start another adventure tomorrow, with a number of issues left over from the last, but with the knowledge that our God is an awesome God and He can handle all of it. Praise the Lord! And we will certainly do our best to keep the faith, trust in Him, and be PATIENT. Thank you Lord!

You know memory is such a wonderful thing. I was talking to someone today and I said you know that would be a great topic for the blog tonight. Not only can I not remember the topic I cannot even remember who it was that I was talking to. But, that might not be all bad, because it is already 10:30 pm and Marty has to read this over, make corrections, and put her approval to this blog. To me it is really important that if both our names are on it, that we both know and are okay with what it says. So, I guess I will bring this to a close and maybe by tomorrow night I will remember what it was that I was going to write about tonight.

Before I do sign off I want to thank a number of you for the emails of appreciation for this blog. It is good and encouraging to know that it is being read and is being helpful. Praise the Lord!

Happy Birthday U.S.A. and may you all have a safe, positive, and meaningful July 4th. God bless!

Marty and Jack
